 Training in Wiltshire |
Hello. My name is Mark Evison and this winter I aim to become the youngest person in history to have walked to the South Pole, solo and unsupported.
The question that I am frequently asked, is why? The answer to this is to both achieve a personal goal and raise sponsorship for three worthy charities. Ever since learning about Scott and Amundsen at Prep School it has always been a goal of mine to reach the South Pole unsupported on foot and, as my time in higher education has finished and before The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, I have the perfect opportunity to accomplish this goal.
 Paulk hauling in Norway |
The journey that I will undertake starts from Hercules Inlet, Greater Antarctica. The walk is 711 miles, which will involve walking approximately 14 miles a day in order to reach the pole within 60 days. The reason for leaving in early November is to maximise summer temperatures as well as snow cover, of course not quite the same summer temperatures as can be expected in the Algarve!!
In preparation, in March of this year I underwent a ten day survival course on the Norwegian ice fields with Geoff Somers, a very knowledgeable and experienced explorer. We covered general cold weather survival, recognition of frostbite and hypothermia, crevasse training as well as getting the feels of living in sub 30 degrees centigrade. This summer, for charity, Sholto Moger (a school friend) and I covered 800km across Northern Spain following the Camino de Santiago in under 19 days, learning to walk long distances under extreme duress and exhaustion.
